Flying still much safer than driving

Although Boeing safety issues have recently made headlines, data shows flying remains much safer than driving

The rate of deaths per 100 million miles traveled by airplanes or vehicles involved in fatal crashes.

Notes: Figures include only flights by US airlines, not foreign airlines flying to or from the United States. It also does not include fatality rates for charter flights, private jets or general aviation, the segment that includes small planes.
