This chart shows a Colorado State University forecast that says that the 2024 hurricane season will include 23 named storms, 11 of which will be hurricanes, and 5 will be major hurricanes. All of these figures are above the 1991-2020 average number of storms in a season.
Note: A storm is named when it reaches "tropical storm" status with sustained winds of 39 miles per hour or higher. A storm becomes a hurricane when sustained winds reach 74 mph. A "major hurricane" is defined as Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, with sustained winds of at least 111 mph.
