Maternal syphilis rate in the US has more than tripled since 2016
More than 10,000 women who gave birth in 2022 had syphilis. The rate among American Indian women was five times higher than average, and rates among Black and Native Hawaiian women were more than double the overall rate.
Cases of maternal syphilis per 100,000 births in US
There were about 280 cases of maternal syphilis for every 100,000 women who gave birth in the US in 2022, up from 87 cases for every 100,000 births in 2016. Among American Indian women, there were more than 1,400 maternal syphilis cases for every 100,000 births in 2022.
