Educational makeup of 9 Cabinet agencies affected by shutdown

Almost 52% of workers in departments affected by the shutdown* have less than a bachelor's degree. Employees with a high school diploma or less comprise more than 33% of staff at Homeland Security and the Department of Transportation, and nearly 43% of workers at the Treasury Department.

*This represents many, but not all parts of government involved in the shutdown. Other workers, such as those at EPA, are not funded through Cabinet-level agencies. It also does not include federal contractors who are not considered full-time employees. The figures represent all workers at an agency and do not distinguish between those furloughed or excepted.
