Federal funding for Moderna dramatically increased in 2020

Moderna has contracts with the US government's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The $483 million from BARDA this year is nearly four times larger than any federal grant awarded to Moderna over the past seven years. In 2016, BARDA announced up to $126 million in grant funding for Moderna to develop a Zika vaccine.
