The majority of unaccompanied children in HHS custody are teenagers
The majority of children who make the dangerous trip to the US–Mexico border alone are between 15 and 17 years old. Of the 26,500 children detained and taken into HHS custody in 2020, nearly 4,000 were 12 years old and younger.
Note: Data current as of February 28. The 17+ years category includes individuals who were initially reported to be minors but later determined to be 18 years or older and transferred back to the Department of Homeland Security.
