Housing affordability has declined nationwide

Every region in the United States has seen a drop in affordability over the last five years. Click the toggle and hover or search for a metro area to see how things have changed.

Note: Metro area circles are sized by population. An affordability index value of 100 or above indicates a median-income family could afford a median-priced home; a value below 100 indicates a median-income family would not be able to afford a median-priced home given the current interest rate. In some regions, the data can show noticeable fluctuations due to seasonal changes in median home prices or shifts in the volume of sales used to calculate those medians.
