Russia and NATO both push for an Arctic military presence

The Arctic is home to more than 60 major military sites, with hundreds more defense installations within the broader region, according to the Simons Foundation, a Canadian non-profit focusing on Arctic security. Russia has at least 30 arctic military installations and has invested heavily in its nuclear-powered submarine fleet, the backbone of its military power in the Arctic.
