Arctic passage shortens sailing time

Unnavigable for much of the year, the Russia-controlled Northern Sea Route can be crossed without ice breakers for a brief summer window. A full transit takes only about 1-2 weeks and can shave a week or more off voyages between Asia and Europe versus the sailing via the Suez canal.
